Water Trading

2026-27 CIT Water Trading Strategy

Central Irrigation Trust (CIT) has published its Water Trading Strategy for 2026–27, prepared in accordance with Part 5A of the Water Act 2007.

The strategy outlines how CIT will manage Eligible Tradeable Water Rights — including Irrigation Rights, Water Delivery Rights, and Water Allocation — across the 12 Irrigation Trusts it operates on behalf of members.

Trading decisions will be guided by four key principles: long-term sustainability, lasting benefit to members, prudent risk management, and responsiveness to market signals. CIT’s preferred approach is to use open and competitive market mechanisms, including water exchanges, brokers, market tenders, and private treaty where appropriate.

The Strategy can be accessed HERE.

The strategy will be reviewed regularly, with updates published via the Bureau of Meteorology’s Data Hub.
